The Army Futures Command (AFC) has established cloud as a foundational part of its IT strategy, but is considering the possibility of moving all applications to its cloud-based Unified Data Environment, as noted in a request for information released October 1.

The RFI notes that command currently uses its Unified Data Environment primarily as an “enterprise enabling platform” and to make data-driven decisions. Looking ahead, AFC is examining “industry technologies available to provide services to transfer all Army Futures Command applications to a Unified Data Environment,” the RFI states.

The RFI envisions a cloud environment that leverages “complimentary open-source components” to the existing Unified Data Environment to host applications and data in an authoritative source. The shift would see a contractor help by providing services to components, migrate apps across both unclassified and secret networks, establish a centralized data warehouse, and embrace DevSecOps to develop new apps.

The command has not decided on an acquisition strategy yet, but is looking to “identify a competitive pool of capable companies” with secret clearances for any future solicitations.

In addition to application migration, AFC is also looking to improve on the existing environment, with data and software engineering support for data science teams. Responses are due by October 21.
