Students can start applying now for summer internships through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) Office of University Programs (OUP).
The internship opportunities are in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields relating to homeland security, according to a post on the S&T webpage. The deadline for applications is Dec. 7. The DHS internship lasts 10 weeks, and offers students research experience at Federal facilities across the country. The post stated that the internship allows students to build rapport with DHS experts.
Students participating in the internship program will be able to conduct research in a wide variety of disciplines, such as engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological and life sciences, environmental science, emergency and incident management, and social sciences. Both undergraduate and graduate students can apply. According to the post, undergraduate participants receive a $6,000 stipend plus travel expenses, and graduate participants receive a $7,000 stipend plus travel expenses.
The U.S. Coast Guard Research and Development Center, the Customs and Borders Protection (CBP) department, the S&T Office for Interoperability and Compatibility, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Transportation Security Laboratory, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Engineer Research and Development Center, the National Security Technologies, and the Department of Energy National Laboratories are some of the facilities that will be hosting students next summer through this internship.
