The Social Security Administration (SSA) has appointed Timothy Amerson deputy associate commissioner and deputy chief information security officer (CISO) for the agency’s Office of Information Security, Amerson announced via his LinkedIn page.

Amerson has 25-plus years of IT expertise in both civilian and military environments. With a demonstrated in-depth knowledge and experience in IT, Amerson wrote, that he “understands strengths and weakness of current and future” IT portfolios.

Amerson will be working in SSA’s Office of Information Security (OIS) – which is responsible for managing, developing, and providing oversight of functions for agency-wide IT security policies and procedures – where he will help develop, manage, and direct SSA’s IT security program.

Before joining SSA, Amerson was director of Infrastructure Operations Cybersecurity Management at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) He first joined the VA in 2013 as a systems analyst and went on to spend nine more years at the agency in various leadership positions.

Amerson began his IT career at the Army National Guard, where he spent 13-plus years in various IT roles, including IT project manager, IT services support supervisor, and information operations network officer.

In addition, Amerson has also held several freelance positions as a technical mentor where he taught his students’ technical cybersecurity skills.
