According to a new survey conducted by Propeller Insights, on behalf of ExpressVPN, 82 percent of Americans think that Congress should do more in 2019 to regulate how big tech companies collect and process online personal data.

The survey of 1,010 U.S. consumers found that while most believe that Congress should do more to regulate technology companies, the majority don’t believe that they will. In all, 59.7 percent do not think Congress will do more.

However, last Wednesday, 15 Democratic senators introduced the Data Care Act, a piece of legislation that would require more responsibility in safeguarding personal information by websites, apps and other online media providers. The survey, conducted on November 27th, shows that 54 percent of the people surveyed believe that Democrats in Congress will do a better job handling online privacy.

“Online privacy is rapidly becoming a key ‘kitchen table’ issue in America,” said Harold Li, vice president at ExpressVPN.

The survey also reveals that 89 percent of Americans think they should have the choice as to whether big tech companies can share their personal data with third parties. 90 percent also believe that tech companies should do a better job in 2019 of self-regulating.

“Privacy is a fundamental right, and internet users should be in control of their personal data and how it should be used,” Li added.
