The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) wants feedback on which Federal datasets would be most helpful to the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, which datasets are difficult to access, and areas with gaps in data and model availability.
In an upcoming notice to the Federal Register, OMB is issuing a request for information for industry and academia to share what datasets they would like to see the Federal government provide to assist with the development of AI models, as part of the National AI R&D Strategic Plan.
“Depending on the R&D goal and application domain, different data sets and models may be needed to accelerate AI advances,” the RFI notes.
The RFI asks about: currently available datasets and any technical issues that stand in the way; datasets that could fall under restricted usage agreements; and datasets that are currently private and not available to the public that could help AI R&D.
The RFI also allows industry to provide feedback on how agencies should design their approach to making data available. Questions include which characteristics are best suited for AI R&D, which models agencies should focus on, and how government can improve its datasets to enhance their usefulness for AI R&D.
Responses will be due 30 days from the date of publication, which is slated for July 10.
