A New York Times report on Tuesday night revealed new details on Facebook’s partnerships with service providers, showing a high level of access to user data for other companies, spurred new calls for data privacy legislation. On Wednesday, Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., tweeted, “This stunning @nytimes report shows that the FTC [the Federal Trade Commission] must crackdown on clear blatant violations by Facebook of the 2011 Consent Order, demanding major penalties, court orders, & other strong remedies.” Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, tweeted “It has never been more clear. We need a Federal privacy law. They are never going to volunteer to do the right thing. The FTC needs to be empowered to oversee big tech.” In its response, the company countered the claims that the integrations with other platforms violated its settlement with the FTC, and said that none of the partnerships gave other companies access to people’s information without permission.
