The House late Tuesday voted to approve H.R. 6229, which would reauthorize the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The House Science, Space, and Technology Committee approved the bill in June, at which time it said the measure would increase “the core NIST scientific and technical research and services lab account by $130 million to transform basic research into innovations and new technologies.” It would also require NIST to expand assistance to Federal agencies to help them use NIST’s framework for improving critical infrastructure cybersecurity, expand its cybersecurity research to address privacy, security, and vulnerability of software tools and communications networks, and accelerate basic quantum science research and standards. The House bill does not appear to have a Senate companion bill.
