The Global Cyber Alliance (GCA) said it will spend $2.5 million to support efforts to provide cybersecurity toolkits for election offices, community organizations, and journalists in preparation for the 2020 presidential election.

Of that total, $1 million will be provide by Craig Newmark Philanthropies, and $1.5 million is being provided by other donors.

The toolkits aim to:

  • Protect media reporters and outlets from cyberattacks that are designed to manipulate public opinion or expose sources;
  • Preserve election integrity and help ensure the accurate count of all votes; and
  • Secure nonprofit community organizations that work to expand the right to vote.

The toolkits, which GCA will make available for free, will have operational tools, guidance, and recommendations to help mitigate cyberattacks and bolster cyberdefense.

“To thrive, American democracy needs a safe, trustworthy press and a secure election process,” said Craig Newmark, founder of Craig Newmark Philanthropies. “I’m proud to support the Global Cyber Alliance as they help bolster two of the most critical tenets of democracy.”
