The Federal government is making strides on its goal to support and advance the research and development of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, according to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy’s (OSTP’s) 2016-2019 Progress Report on Advancing Artificial Intelligence R&D, released today.

The report summarizes the investments made by Federal agencies in the last three years, aligning them to the National AI R&D Strategy and its priority areas. In total, the progress report highlights 23 agencies that have made significant investments that align with the AI R&D Strategy.

“The activities listed here are highlights that are responsive to and well-aligned with the national AI R&D strategic plan. They offer a glimpse into how Federal AI R&D activities are driving advances in AI and in turn impacting many sectors of the economy,” the report states.

The report takes a positive view of Federal investments, highlighting efforts like DARPA’s AI Next campaign, advancements in AI for agriculture from the Department of Agriculture, and the Department of Homeland Security’s use of AI to aid first responders, among other examples.

“The United States benefits significantly from the broad spectrum of Federal agencies that invest in AI from their unique mission perspectives, consistent with the national AI R&D strategy,” the strategy states.
