Today the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation approved, among other measures, a STEM-focused bill and two technology-related nominations. During today’s business meeting, the committee advanced H.R. 4323, the Supporting Veterans in STEM Careers Act, out of committee by a voice vote. The legislation, as it name suggests, calls on the National Science Foundation to encourage veterans to study and pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and computer science in coordination with other Federal agencies that serve veterans, and submit a plan to Congress for enhancing outreach efforts to veterans. The committee also approved of the nominations of Kelvin Droegemeier to be director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and James Morhard to be deputy administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Both the legislation and nominations move to the full Senate for further consideration.
