The Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) published a five-year Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) looking to develop new mobile communications security standards.

The solicitation would establish a research and development (R&D) project for a Secure and Resilient Mobile Network Infrastructure (SRMNI). The project would be an effort to address emerging and current challenges that slow down the Federal adoption of mobile communications technologies, including risks associated with 5G innovation.

“The newly created SRMNI R&D project will lead the government’s development of innovative solutions and technologies to protect legacy, current and 5G mobile network communications, services, and equipment,” Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Under Secretary for S&T William N. Bryan said.

CISA and S&T will be holding a joint SRMNI Industry Day on May 16 to introduce the solicitation to mobile security leaders and experts. Proposals for responses are due by June 26, while proposal selections will be announced Sept. 24.

“This BAA solicitation and SRMNI R&D will help DHS work with industry to identify threats and vulnerabilities to mobile network infrastructure, and inform the development and adoption of security standards,” CISA Director Chris Krebs said in a statement.
