The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and Singapore’s Ministry of Defence signed a Statement of Intent (SOI) on Monday to enhance their cooperation in data, analytics, and artificial intelligence (AI).

The agreement marks an opportunity to strengthen interoperability between the two nations’ defense systems and “promote values-based global leadership in responsible AI applications within the defense sector,” according to a statement from DoD.

The SOI aims to facilitate a holistic approach to technological collaboration between the two defense establishments, paving the way for conversations about best practices in leveraging data, analytics, and AI effectively and at scale.

Both nations have identified key areas of collaboration, such as date quality, responsible development and use of AI, and talent management.

This recent agreement builds on Singapore Ministry of Defence’s and the DoD’s long-standing cooperation on defense technology – such as the 2015 Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement – where both countries agreed to further defense cooperation in military, policy, cyber defense, and emerging technology, among other areas.

DoD Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer Radha Plumb and BG Yew Chee Leung, Singapore’s deputy secretary of technology, signed the SOI.

“Singapore, a key technology innovator in the Asia-Pacific region, remains one of our most valued defense partners and we look forward to further deepening this critical relationship,” said Plumb in a statement.
